The trailer of perhaps the most anticipated film of the year, Sanju is out and I seriously do not know how to put my thoughts in order.
Beautifully chaotic, Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju trailer seamlessly takes us back and forth between the many phases of Dutt’s complicated life; making us envy him one moment and be thankful for not being in his place the next.
As is obvious from the trailer, a huge portion of the screen time will be allocated to Sanjay Dutt’s jail terms and the court proceedings in between.
This might serve as a damper for those who were expecting an out and out comedy like Hirani’s previous big screen offerings. However, given the fact that over two decades of Dutt’s life have revolved around the serial-bombings’ case, his biopic could possibly not be made without discussing that prolonged and painful chapter in great detail.
In fact the motivation for this biopic itself seems to have come from Dutt’s time in jail.
“…I’m a lot of things but I’m not a terrorist…” says Ranbir Kapoor (essaying Dutt’s character) at one point and you realize that more than anything else, Sanjay Dutt wants the world to believe once and for all that as deeply flawed as he might be, he is not a cold-blooded murderer responsible for the serial bombings that shook Bombay in 1993.
The trailer intermittently gives glimpses of Hiran’s trademark style of narration that uses humour as the primary tool to communicate. That said, one does wonder how will hilarity be kept alive while narrating the dark chapters of Sanjay Dutt’s life. This is something one will certainly have to watch the movie to find out.
With a brilliant ensemble cast led by the exceptionally talented, Ranbir Kapoor narrating the story of one of South Asia’s most controversial yet beloved actors and the return of the mastermind director-producer duo, i.e. Rajkumar Hirani and Vidoh Vinod Chopra, are reasons enough to feel excited about Sanju.
Great trailer! Looking forward to the watching the full film!
