While the world is slowly coming alive to the threat posed by climate change and global warming, another environmental hazard has been brewing silently for decades: plastic pollution.
According to estimates, 1 million plastic bottles are bought every minute and about 1.4 billion plastic bottles are consumed per day!
The humankind’s unhealthy fixation with plastic would not have been a matter of importance were it not for the fact that plastic is single-handedly choking our oceans, endangering the existence of marine life and making its way into human bodies!
According to an estimate between 5 million to 13 million tonnes of plastic finds its way into the oceans every year. This frighteningly high amount of plastic is then ingested by sea birds, fish and other organisms and when humans consume some of these animals, the plastic leak makes its way into our bodies!
Scientists report that individuals who eat seafood ingest up to 11,000 tiny pieces of plastic every year! A research conducted by Plymouth University found that one-third of all fish caught in the UK contained plastic in its systems.
This and similar researches in the developed pockets of the world have led to calls for more in-depth studies to prevent the incidence of microplastic pollution found in the fish from making its way into the human body.
What Are the Ways to End Plastic Pollution?
These 3 solutions are simple and everyone with just a little bit of will can practice them quite easily.
Reduce Plastic Consumption
This is the first and most important step among the ways to end plastic pollution.
If it is absolutely necessary to use plastic items, make sure that they are re-cycled.

Additionally, avoid all such plastic items that only have a one-time use. These include, plastic bags, straws, bottles, cups etc.
Recycle, Recycle, Recycle!
After using a plastic item, either find a way to re-cycle it yourself (you’ll find plenty of fun ways to do this with just a quick Google search) or sought them separately among domestic waste so that government authorities such as CDA, KDA, LDA etc. can easily identify them for recycling.
Organize clean-up events
All revolutions are a result of small steps taken by visionary people. Among all the ways to end plastic pollution, this one can actually be a lot of fun!

Get your friends, neighbours and family members together once a month and jointly undertake the task of cleaning up any one area in your neighbourhood that’s particularly polluted with plastic. Each member of the “cleaning crew” can bring along a pair of rubber gloves, a face mask and 3 to 5 cloth bags to collect the plastic waste. Once done, you can hand it over to the nearest re-cycling plant in your area.
Not only will you have a great time catching up with friends and family but will also feel mighty heroic after the job is done! Think about it!
If each one of us consciously tries to adopt these ways to end plastic pollution, we can literally save the world!
