While taking a walk on Clifton Beach on Tuesday morning, cricket legend Wasim Akram’s wife, Shaniera Akram was in for an unpleasant surprise that left her demanding the closure of the beach.

Taking to Twitter Shaniera posted multiple pictures of open medical waste littered across the beach in Karachi. This included used open needle synergies and vials of blood.

In the first tweet that she posted as part of the thread to highlight the hazards of Clifton Beach, Shaniera wrote, ” As of this minute, I Shaniera Akram, a citizen of Karachi declare Clifton beach officially hazardous and is in state of an emergency.”

She then went on to share the nature and quantity of medical waste that she had seen on the beach.

“I have found over 4 dozen open syringes in the last 10 minutes. This is a biohazard and our beach needs to be closed down until the proper authorities can guarantee the people of Karachi are safe. This has gone on long enough, peoples lives are at risk.”

To press home the point, Shaniera also posted pictures and videos from her walk.

“There is kilometres of medical waste including hundreds of open needle syringes amongst other things, that has come in from the ocean. Clifton beach, at this moment, is extremely dangerous and needs to be shut down #CliftonBeach #MedicalWaste #BeachShutDown #ImSoSorryKarachi,” she posted alongside a video.

This picture collage posted by Shaniera Akram shows the depressingly high concentration of medical waste littered all across Clifton Beach.

While she demanded for the beach to be closed down for public until the concerned authorities had cleaned it up, she cautioned common citizens against going to the beach and trying to clean it themselves.

It remains to be seen if Karachi administration and Sindh government will take Shaniera’s pleas seriously and take emergency measures to make Clifton Beach safe for those who frequent it.
