Pakistanis and Indians combine national Anthems

Pakistan and India share a history that is certainly one of the most complex international relations in the modern world. The relationship is further complicated with the indoctrination of hate through text books, politics and media. It is because of this that there is virtually no social media thread about either country where Pakistani and Indian citizens don’t lock horns.

However, despite the constant tension between the bickering neighbours, there is a subtle movement led by the youth of both the countries that is helping Pakistan and India rise above their differences and embrace the message of peace and friendship.

In the last week alone, in anticipation of the 70th anniversary of both Pakistan and India’s independence, we have seen unprecedented gestures of compassion by common citizens that have warmed hearts across the sub-continent.

We thought that the rendition of Pakistan’s national anthem by Indian Acapella band, Voxchord was a one-of-its-kind effort but then “Voice of Ram” – a Facebook humanitarian page – recently posted a video in which singers from Pakistan and India are seen singing a combined version of the national anthems of the two countries.

Such an act would have been scandalous a couple of decades ago but the fact that it’s not just happened but is also receiving a lot of love signifies two important things: (1) common citizens on both sides want peace so that both the countries can focus their energies on bringing prosperity to their people and (2) social media is an extremely powerful tool and any common person with a vision can make a huge impact through it!

The 70th year of independence is proving to be the year we saw the first signs of ice melting between the estranged neighbours. May this movement gain strength! May peace prevail! Lots of love from Pakistan!
