Man of Steel vs Superman

The role of Superman is iconic in the superhero genre and the DC Universe. Actors like Henry Cavill, Christopher Reeve, and Tom Welling have played this role in the movie adaptation of this historic comic book character. Superman is meant to be a symbol of hope, truth, and justice, and is an inspiration and idol for millions of kids and adults alike. In this new 2025 adaptation, James Gunn has potentially revived the DC Universe. In this review, I’ll be comparing Zack Snyder’s and James Gunn’s Superman adaptations. Read on!

Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel

Henry Cavill as Man of Steel (2013)

Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel was played by Henry Cavill in 2013. Although Cavill played the role exceptionally well, the fans of Superman are divided when it comes to Snyder’s “dark” portrayal of Superman. Superman is meant to be an upbeat character who inspires generations and serves as a symbol of hope for others, but in Snyder’s universe, Cavill portrays a dark, brooding, vigilante character, which is the opposite of what the character is intended to be. Some fans speculate that Henry opposed the way that Superman was portrayed after reading the comics for the role, but supposedly Snyder refused. In fact, far from being optimistic and positive, Cavill’s Superman maintains a brooding aura and is portrayed as extremely powerful. Earning $291 million in 2013, this movie is a record-setting film, enjoyed by critics and fans alike.

James Gunn’s Superman

David Corenswet as Superman (2025)

David Corenswet brings to life James Gunn’s depiction of Superman in 2025. This new and improved vision of the iconic hero is meant to revive the DC Universe and sort of bring its fans back after a string of subpar films. David Corenswet plays this role to perfection, in my opinion, since not only does he portray a hopeful, truthful, and overall just Superman, but he also embodies the nerdiness of Clark Kent. This film pays respect to Superman’s original suit, which, although cheesy, is a huge part of the character.

Keeping Superman hopeful through the small details (From when he goes through the trouble to save a squirrel), this film was refreshing and different from how fans remember Superman in Snyder’s portrayal. With a whopping $292.4 million grossed from the film, this movie outshines Snyder’s economically.

The final verdict?

In my opinion, Superman (2025) outshines Man of Steel in my eyes. Although both actors were amazing in their respective roles, David Corenswet plays the Man of Steel in a way that highlights the essence of who Superman is, a Superhero with a heart of gold.
