Three days after Pakistani filmmaker Jami came out with his harrowing account of rape 13 years ago, Meesha Shafi, the woman who gave a lease of life to the #MeToo wave in Pakistan reached out to offer support.

@jamiazaad I see you. I hear you. I stand with you. Always,” wrote Meesha extending support to the filmmaker.

Meesha’s message to Jami was part of a thread of tweets where the diva called out the society at large for its duplicity and refusal to “change for the better.”

“Crying for all of you who will believe anything over a victim speaking up. You don’t want change for the better. You only want to pretend to be upset as long as it doesn’t involve anything more uncomfortable than typing #neverforget.”

-Meesha Shafi

Taking a philosophical dig at the #MeToo apologists, Shafi wrote:

“When we’re all trapped in our vile quagmire of filth,
Who do these truth tellers think they are?
Let’s mob them, rob them and eat them for dinner,
Lose whatever morals we have, let’s become even thinner.”

Jami responded to Meesha with a tweet that bore only the lightening emoji, perhaps signifying his respect for her powerful words.

Meesha Shafi and Jami have both set important precedents for Pakistani women and men to come forward and speak-up against sexual harassment and violence. It is now up to the society on whether it chooses to walk down the road less traveled or continue to hide behind the facade of the “convenient truth.”
