11 Thoughts After Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s “Yousuf Raza Gillani Dramaybaaz Hai” Speech

I’m not one to follow politics but whenever I do it’s exclusively to see politicians get personal with each other. And so, after Shah Mahmood Qureshi began trending for an apparently intense tirade against Yousuf Raza Gillani, it just made sense for me to watch the video – with a bowl of buttered popcorns in the lap of course!

The clip wasn’t very long but Shah Mahmood was out to settle a score with Yousuf Raza Gillani and every second of his speech screamed, “TESTAMENT!”

So, for those who might not know the context, Yousuf Raza Gillani recently proclaimed that he was resigning from senate and that he had submitted his istifa to PPP Chairperson.

Now, we’ve all seen this sort of political drama before. Each time a politician has a point to make, s/he threatens to resign and instead of tendering the resignation to the right person (which would be Chairperson Senate in this case), the resignation is handed over to the party chief.

Doesn’t make sense, but watcha gonna do ’bout it mahkoom awaam?

To cut a long story short, after Gillani resorted to this age-old tactic, his political nemesis, SMQ jumped onto the opportunity and dedicated a sizable portion of his speech – which by the way was originally supposed to be a policy statement on the State Bank of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill – to basically establish Gillani as a dramaybaaz!

So, while I watched the Foreign Minister’s rant with a mixture of extreme amusement and disbelief, these 11 thoughts crossed my mind:

1.    Kehna kiya chahtey hain, bhai jaan?

2.    Sherry Rehman to Yousuf Raza Gillani, “This guftugu is too awami for my taste; I’m leaving in a bit, proxy laga dena!”

3.    Chalo jee! Did he just forget his talking points???

4.    The man behind Shah Mehmood Qureshi is like – Aag lagay basti main hum apni masti main!

5.    Calm down tiger! Calm the fudge down!

6.   Oh my God, the English and the accent!! What a way to warn someone!

7.    Sherry Rehman be like, bus bhi kardo bhai kitna bolo gay!

8.    O! So, that’s why people keep comparing the parliament with machli mandi on my TL. Makes a lotta sense!

9.    Jee, jee, qasam sey hum jaantay hain kay aapko sab pata hai…
