Zohair Toru New Video

Some eight years ago a video went viral following a PTI protest against the infamous Raymond Davis incident that had resulted in the death of two Pakistanis at the hands of the American national.

PTI chairman, Imran Khan had taken to the roads to protest the killings, demanding justice for the victims and the bereaved families. A truly emotional time for the nation, scores of people had welcomed Khan’s protest and joined it in Lahore.

The then administration, unhappy with Khan’s involvement had resorted to tactics aimed at dispersing the crowd and discouraging it from reassembling.

From among those protesters, one, Zohair Toru gained national fame after his interview with a local news network went viral. His faulty Urdu, unfortunate use of verbal expressions and an overall childlike demeanor made him the subject of countless unfortunate jibes. From being labelled as a “mummy-daddy” and “burger bacha” to being ridiculed on national television, Zohair Toru’s innocence became an excuse for cyber-bullying.

Eight years later, Toru is back and he is no longer a young-adult struggling to articulate his thoughts into coherent sentences.

Quite on the contrary, Toru is now a lawyer who has recently returned to Pakistan after completing his education and is engaged in providing pro-bono legal aid to those marginalized Pakistanis who cannot afford it.

He took to Facebook recently to post a video in which, a much older and leaner looking Zohair, spoke confidently about the humiliation that he faced 8 years ago after his interview went viral on social media.

He did not shy away from accepting how, as a mere boy at the time, he had been unable to express his views in a way that would resonate with the masses.

At the same time, he also shared the ordeal that he – and many like him – face as a result of internet trolling. “Cyber bullying is a disease that entirely kills empathy and humanity in people,” stated Zohair scoring home an important and often over-looked point in today’s digital age.

We are all guilty of indulging in one or the other form of cyber-bullying and never really stop to think how we are impacting the self-esteem of the person on whose expense we provoke laughter.

Zohair Toru, then deserves both praise for braving the might of social media once again and a heartfelt apology from all of us for contributing to his agony almost a decade ago.

In the video, Zohair poses a question to his audience, “Are you among those who want to crush another person’s self-respect and dignity just for your entertainment?”

The answer to this question should be a simple, “No.” However, truth be told, we are all guilty of cyber-bullying and whether we like it or not, we are unfortunately among those people who have hurt others for the sake of a few measly laughs.  The worst part, perhaps, is that we refuse to learn from our mistakes and continue to feed this unhealthy culture of disrespect everyday through our social media interactions.

Thank you Zohair Toru for this crash course in self-reflection and we’re deeply sorry for hurting you!
