Mahum Shahid is a visual artist based in Islamabad who is pursuing Bachelors in Media Sciences.

“Being an artist is like being an alien, you feel like you are trapped on Earth and you want to tell humans how your world is like.”

She loves to bring her concepts, her perspectives, her emotions into tangible form through different mediums.

Her art is not limited to painting or sketching on a paper. Mahum also creates digital art in the form of photo-manipulation and also uses photography to convey her ideas.

“Art is everywhere.”

Mahum used to have anxiety disorder and to counter that, she started journaling, which led to doodling and drawing different stuff. She then started an art blog on Instagram.

When her Instagram reached a decent audience, Mahum started wall painting at events.

Recently, Mahum Shahid painted the walls of Soch clinic. Soch is an organization working towards increasing mental health awareness in Pakistan.

For her it was an amazing project, because she thinks that she in a way contributed to creating awareness about mental health. Soch clinic then asked her to join their team.

One of her paintings at Soch clinic is a unicorn in a child’s room. She painted that to make the children feel unique as unicorns are unique, mystical creatures. She does not want children to be bogged down because of their illness and unicorns being symbols of strength and beauty are an excellent way to transmit happy vibes.

It also consists of geometric figures, which symbolize that people suffering from different disorders are accepted at the clinic and not discriminated against.

She is just 19 and is not sure whether she wants to take-up painting as a career. Right now, she is just enjoying the journey.

“Art is my escape from this messed up reality.”
