Childhood Films - Home Alone - Baby's Day Out - The Lion King

The definition of clean, family entertainment is rapidly evolving into something that is…well, neither clean nor particularly family-friendly!

Sure, Disney and Pixar are still around and coming up with films that provide wholesome entertainment to the entire household. However, feature length, non-animated films aimed specifically for kids are becoming a rarity with each year.

So, we went through our good old VHS collection to pick 10 childhood films that we bet kids today will enjoy just as much as we did back in the day.

Here they are!

The Home Alone Series

Home Alone and its sequels take the cake when we talk about movies for kids. Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) plays a brat in the movies who ends up alone either at home or in a different city away from his family and has to fight a criminal duo in his own childish and naughty way!

 The Lion King

The Lion King has been the most favorite movie of an entire generation. After touching millions of tiny hearts in the 90’s, the Disney film remains just as relevant and entertaining today as it was two decades ago.

The cherry on the top is certainly The Lion King’s outstanding sound track sung by Elton John. If your kids haven’t watched The Lion King yet, its about time that they should!

The Mighty Ducks

The Mighty Ducks and its sequels are my absolute favorite childhood films.

The film is about an ice hockey team that has never won a single match until coach Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) takes charge, changing the team’s fortunes forever!

Matilda

Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) plays the daughter of a very crooked and corrupt cars’ dealer. Matilda realizes that she has telepathic powers, which she learns to use to conjure 1 hour and 42 minutes worth of adventures!

The movie is full of fun and laughter and is certainly excellent entertainment for children!

Toy Story

The first Disney-Pixar creation and the first computer generated animated film, Toy Story was destined for greatness from the word go!

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen’s voices give life to the protagonists – who are, as the title suggests, toys that can talk! These seemingly ordinary toys come to life when no one is around and their adventures are humorous, risky and extremely entertaining.

Angels in the Outfield

We see a very young Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the movie as a fan of the baseball team, Anaheim Angels. What’s funny is that it is the worst team in the league but their fates change when angels come to the field and help them win the games.

A far-from-reality and emotionally charged movie that kids will most definitely love.

The Parent Trap

Lindsay Lohan plays a double role in the movie as the twin daughter of Nick Parker (Dennis Quaid) and Elizabeth James (late Natasha Richardson). The sisters are separated at the time of birth and each parent takes one. They reunite and figure out that they are sisters during a summer camp and plan to reunite their parents.

This movie is simply sweet and adorable to the core.

Jumanji

Late Robin Williams along with Bonnie Hunt are part of a magical board game Jumanji which brings mystical creatures to life from within the game into the real world. The movie is a fun packed adventure ride right from the beginning and dare I say, oh-so-much better than its recent remake.

Casper

The movie version of the famous cartoon series, Casper the Friendly Ghost was an absolute delight for kids when it released in 1995.

The movie stars, Bill Pullman as Dr. James Harvey, who moves into an old house with his little daughter. Little does he know that the house is haunted and 4 ghosts live there. To their luck, Casper is one of the ghosts and that is where all the fun begins.

Baby’s Day Out

Last on our list is Baby’s Day Out.

The film revolves around a toddler who is kidnapped by a group of crooks headed by the famous Joe Mantegna. The baby escapes the kidnappers and by luck and miracle moves around the city oblivious to perils that lie at every step.

If your kids haven’t seen Baby’s Day Out then they are missing out on a lot!
