Anyone who has seen a single ‘coming-of-age’ teen film knows this story-line. On entering high school you realize you’ve been placed at the bottom of the social ladder never mind how “popular” you were in middle school!

Surprise, surprise! It’s hard adjusting to being a small fish in a big pond as a first year student.

Fortunately, being a high school student means you’ll finally be treated like an adult. Don’t get too excited though! It also means abiding by certain rules you didn’t have to before and less leniency from the administration. Teachers won’t hesitate to call girls out for not wearing their hair in tight ponytails or for putting on one too many layers of lip-gloss.

You can’t pull a rabbit out of your hat at the last minute anymore and acing Cambridge examinations or finals requires months of dedication.

On the other hand, one wants to experience all the highs and lows of high school, go out with one’s friends and participate in extracurricular activities.

Unfortunately, time is a luxury you don’t have anymore and finding a middle ground between your social and student life can be tough.

In high school, the only time you have conversations with your teachers outside of class is when you need to ask about missed work or an upcoming test. This is not always the case but more often than not, teachers are too busy and engulfed in their own workload to give personal attention. Sometimes, the only thing that seems to matter to them is whether or not the student is doing well academically.
