Shehbaz Sharif’s “Paan-Chewing Karachi” Comment Has Started A War Of Words Between Lahoris & Karachites

The former Chief Minister of Punjab, or Khadim-e-Punjab as he likes to be dubbed, Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was in Karachi a couple of days back. His motivation for making a rare appearance in the city of lights was of course campaigning for the upcoming elections.

The younger Sharif – to the surprise of many – received a warm welcome upon his arrival with thousands of people making time to participate in the PML-N jalsa.

Mian Shehbaz Sharif even flexed his vocal chords and entertained the participants with his singing prowess at one of the events that he attended during his two days in Karachi.

Of course many claims about past performance and lofty promises for Karachi and Sindh’s future development were also made at the public processions.

For a while there all seemed perfect.

In fact Sharif’s successful public appearances made some speculate that PML-N might actually  gain a seat or two in the largest city of Pakistan.

Shehbaz Sharif himself seemed delighted with the response that he had received.

However, things quickly went south when Sharif, an otherwise seasoned politician, offended the locals with an imprudent comment about changing the “paan-chewing Karachi to Lahore.”

Now, anyone who has ever been to Karachi or has a friend from the city knows that taking a dig at the paan-chewing habits of the Karachites is an offense very few would be willing to forgive.

Sharif’s charming endeavours to woo the locals were quickly and completely forgotten once the news of this unforgivable comment got out.

Not ones to miss an opportunity handed to them on a silver platter, political rivals were quick to join in on the bashing.

This PTI leader went as far as to film a video while eating paan just to make a point!

But criticizing the politics of one’s opponents is a strategy as old as politics itself. So, one would not have given it much heed had the whole fiasco not turned into Lahore vs. Karachi brawl.

As the elections draw nearer, we fear that the racial divide will only become more conspicuous.

So, for all the lovely Pakistanis dispersed across every nook and corner of the country, vote for whichever party that you support…

…But first, take a deeeeeeeep breath and repeat:
