In her post, Hayat had stated, “We have broken glass ceilings, we have broken the stereotypes, and we have been and continue to be prepared to go the extra mile, to be judged by unrealistic standards, to be held more accountable.” Today would have been Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s 65th birthday. It is an ideal time to reflect on her undoubted achievements. I have never really been a political person but leaving that aside there is no denying the great strides she made for women’s empowerment and equality in our country – everything we are still fighting for even today. There was a time when she made women believe that almost anything was possible – she gave us hope and inspired us to reach for the stars. I am privileged to have been given the opportunity to research and learn more about her life and sitting here I can only reflect on so much more that could have been had she not lost her life so tragically. The sign of a true leader is the legacy they leave behind and the reverence with which the people remember her irrespective of party allegiances. She was a truly remarkable woman and I look forward to giving life to her story soon.”

While many welcomed the news, Bhutto’s children it seems did not take the revelation politely.

Mohtarma’s eldest daughter, Bakhtawar Bhutto, who was clearly taken by surprise with Hayat’s announcement threatened legal action against the makers of the biopic thorough her Twitter handle.

Mehwish Hayat being the lovely soul that she is immediately took stock of the concerns of the Bhutto family and responded to Bakhtawar’s tweet assuring her that the project was in its early stages of conception and it would not go on floors until formal consent was secured from Benazir’s heirs.

She also added that Benazir Bhutto was among her idols and that regardless of a film she would love to meet Bakhtawar and learn more about the leader.

While we completely understand the apprehensions that the Bhutto clan might have, it is also true that the Benazir Bhutto biopic – if at all it is made – might actually help improve the fortunes of the PPP that has rapidly deteriorated from a national political force to a provincial party.

Also, the powerhouse performer that Hayat is, it would be great to see her play the role of one of the most powerful women that Pakistan has seen.

As far as we are concerned, please make the Benazir biopic and make it soon!
