The month of Ramadan provides a great opportunity to develop taqwa (piety) and become a good human being. The holy month allows things to slow down and hence, offers sufficient time to reflect on the way we are utilizing our time on this planet.
The routine in Ramadan makes it easy for us to let go of those bad habits that are common yet difficult to leave. Here is a quick list of top 5 habits that most of us can aim to do away with during the sacred month.

5. Boasting
We all like being praised, don’t we? Still, there has to be a limit to everything and too much of boasting not only leaves a bad impression on others but also puts an individual’s good work (reward or sawaab) at risk in the world hereafter.
Therefore, let’s not flaunt about our abilities, possessions and achievements this month and instead practice humility and allow modesty to lead us towards the road to satisfaction.

4. Back Biting
Backbiting makes way for multiple complications and insecurities in life both here and hereafter still, it is amongst the most difficult habits to quit. However, if we can learn to use an empty stomach and an extremely low energy level as an excuse to speaking less and only when necessary, the habit of backbiting should go on its own by the time Ramadan ends.

3. Wasting Food
As Pakistanis we must understand that our country has not been doing well on the hunger index. Therefore, instead of wasting food during the Sehr and Iftar, it is obligatory that the privileged classes share as much of it as possible with the unfortunate.
Not only should this help in earning rewards for the life here after but the practice if continued throughout for the next five years or so can also go a long way in curbing poverty and allowing our fellow countrymen better nutrition that they are denied of owing to the given circumstances.

2. Anger and other Aggressive Behaviors
There is no denying the fact that the culture of sub-continent can at times make way for attitudes and behaviors that advocate for violence (both verbal and physical) as a means to tackle issues that have direct bearing on the life of a common man.
There is no point in fasting if it leads towards behaviors that are violent in nature. To make the most out of the holy month therefore, it is important to develop patience and the habit of forgiving others.

1. Dishonesty
Lying, skipping work hours, bribery, nepotism, deceitetc are all different ways of being dishonest and practices that gradually lead one towards a certain disaster both here and hereafter.
The month of Ramadan and the fasting hours in particular, allow us all to identify how we are being dishonest with our own selves and others and how we can show restrain from actions through which we contribute in a negative manner towards the very society we live in.
