Dr Maleeha Lodhi bid farewell to United Nations after having served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) for the past four and half years. She was replaced by Munir Akram who is a former UN ambassador.

“Representing Pakistan at the world’s most important multilateral forum was both a privilege and an enormous responsibility. I had planned to move on following the United Nations General Assembly and am fortunate to leave on a high note after a successful visit by Prime Minister Imran Khan and am humbled by the appreciation I have received and the support I have also received over the years.”

-Maleeha Lodhi

At the UN, she was known for putting forward Pakistan’s position on Kashmir. Lodhi was Pakistan’s female Permanent Representative at the UN.

Maleeha Lodhi indicated that she wanted to move on in response to question raised by Sherry Rehman as to why she was replaced following a successful US tour of Imran Khan.

Even though Maleeha said that she herself wanted to move on to the next assignment; the decision to replace her was met with a lot of criticism.

Some also had a problem with the appointment of Munir Akram. People said that someone accused of domestic violence should not be given such a key position.

Akram was accused of domestic violence in 2003 in New York and was called back to Pakistan. US State Department had asked Pakistan to withdraw Akram’s diplomatic immunity. The matter was settled outside the court.

Some people even came up with bizarre reasons of her replacements saying Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi asked him to sack her.

Maleeha Lodhi wished her successor, Munir Akram best of luck!
