How The Murder of Nimrita Kumari Shook The Collective Conscious of Pakistanis

Nimrita Kumari from Ghotki was found dead in her hostel room on 16 September. She was a final year student of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU)’s Bibi Aseefa Dental College in Larkana.

Nimrita’s friends grew worried when she did not respond to their knocks. The door was finally broken and it was then that Nimrita’s body was found in the locked room.

The University Chancellor Dr. Anila Attaur Rehman said the incident appeared to be one of suicide. However, Nimrita’s brother while talking to media said that she had strangulation marks on her neck, which indicated murder.

A committee has been formed by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Aneela Atta-ur-Rahman to probe Kumari’s alleged suicide.

Police said it was early to say whether had she committed suicide or had been murdered. Police shifted her body to district headquarter hospital for postmortem to identify the cause of death.

Nimrita’s hostel room has been sealed and police has taken her mobile phone for investigation.

Soon, the hashtag #JusticeForNimrita started trending as Pakistanis demanded justice for the medical student.

People also requested Pakistan People Party’s government to take the murder case of Nimrita Kumari seriously.

This incident happened at a time when Hindu community in Ghotki is already under threat after a Hindu school principal was accused of blasphemy.
