Everything You Need To Know About The Caretaker Prime Minister, Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk

Just when we thought that the government and opposition will never be able to decide on a caretaker Prime Minister, the political actors finally decided to end the uncertainty. Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice (R) Nasir-ul-Mulk has thus, been named as the country’s caretaker Prime Minister ahead of the July 2018 polls.

For those of you who might not know Justice Mulk, we decided to give a quick summary of his experience and competencies.

He Comes from a Politically Influential Family

The former Chief Justice belongs to one of the most politically powerful families of Swat.

His father, Seth Kamran and younger brother, Shuja-ul-Mulk have both served as Senators. Rafil-ul-Mulk, also his brother has served as the Mayor of Swat.

Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk has Held a Number of Key Positions

In his career spanning nearly four decades, the caretaker PM has served at a number of high profile positions.

These include his tenure as the Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court (2004 – 2005), Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan (2013 – 2014) and of course as the 22nd Chief Justice of Pakistan (2014 – 2015).

He Refused to Take Oath Under PCO

Justice (R) Nasir-ul-Mulk was among those judges who had refused to take oath under PCO (i.e. Provisional Constitutional Order) in 2007 and were forcibly removed by then President General Pervez Musharraf.

Following the success of the Lawyer’s Movement, Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk was reinstated as a senior Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

He Passed the Judgement on the Mukhtaraan Mai Gang Rape Case

Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk has also presided over high-profile cases, the most famous of which is perhaps the Mukhtaraan Mai gang rape case.

Many Pakistanis believe that he failed Mukhtaraan Mai and the cause of rape survivors with his judgment.
