It is extremely important for a supervisor and a sub-ordinate to clearly define and communicate the boundaries of their relationship. Very often do we see managers over-working staff members who are both responsible and hardworking however, providing little reward during annual increments etc. Similarly, it is common again to see workers taking for granted a supervisor who by nature is kind and easy going.

To avoid the aforesaid, it is important that both parties define boundaries where dos and don’ts are totally and completely understood and where there is no room left for one part to take undue advantage of the other.

2. Knowing When to Provide Feedback

Criticism

More often than not people and for one reason or the other people underestimate the value of providing honest feedback. In case of supervisors it is important that they know when to criticize and when to appreciate. It is also important to note that a lack of feedback from a supervisor can eventually lead towards confusion or lethargy among the staff members. Too much of it on the other hand particularly if it is negative can end up in frustration for the workers. Therefore, it is equally important to know that there are times when remaining quiet is the best remedy to a problem.

Similarly, in case of an employee it is important to understand that it is always better to communicate every now and then about how and what they feel regarding a given assignment or their workplace. As long as the feedback is honest, there is no harm in appreciating or criticizing the nature of the assignment, a colleague or even the boss himself. Even if there is backlash initially, eventually people begin to respect and seek advice from a person who they feel is both honest and reasonable while sharing his/her views.
