Amid the mayhem on the roads and the environment of uncertainty that had gripped Pakistan over the last few days, Islamabad witnessed one of its most efficient civil servants, Deputy Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat rise to the occasion and help maintain as much calm as the chaos allowed. From tear-gassed roads to Twitter, the capital’s young D.C was virtually everywhere, playing his role to ensure that citizens remained safe and aware.
While in the field, the Deputy Commissioner’s Twitter handle remained active throughout the chaos, timely informing citizens about the situation of the highways and key intersections as well as the safest routes for commute between the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
After 2 hours of active negotiation and use of passive force GT Road is cleared for all. Next target is Taramari Chowk

Motorway to Islamabad Kashmir Highway is cleared from 26 No. Choongi. Traffic can move in and out of Islamabad on Motorway. GT road is still blocked. We plan to clear it within an hour.

What was particularly heartwarming was the fact that Hamza Shafqaat remained on ground despite having stones pelted at him and on-duty police officers by the protesters.
Taramari Chowk cleared. Few policemen got hit by stones. I have had a minor injury. Over all situation is under control. Traffic good to go. Rawat cleared on GT Road as well. Alhamdolillah

In trying times when multi-tasking can fail even the best, Deputy Commissioner Islamabad took it upon himself to debunk fake news doing rounds. This was an extremely important contribution given the fact that a few old videos of protesters entering the Red Zone were spreading a rapid sense of harassment among the residents of the capital city.
No sir. This is not true. Red zone is completely safe. Entire Islamabad is cleared except Faizabad. Red zone is sealed https://t.co/4q6GgOF7rD

Red zone, Blue area and Margalla Road are all clear and open for movement. No one has entered though D chowk inside constitution avenue. Express chowk and D chowk are clear as well. Video being shown whereby protesters are entering Red zone is out of context
— Office of Deputy Commissioner Islamabad (@dcislamabad) November 2, 2018
This is out of context. Red zone is completely clear. I just moved from there and going to Faizabad. Anyone may come and see for themselves https://t.co/5Cb2QBEQnR

And despite what must have been an endless few days, the civil servant kept his sense of humour alive.
These are not tears of joy. This was tear gas 🤪 https://t.co/UKCGAAlA1H

Immediately after the news of Maulana Samiul Haq’s assassination became public and a fresh wave of panic took over the twin cities, the D.C was once again on top of the situation.
Maulana Sami ul Haq has been assassinated. Small protests have erupted in Aabpara chowk. Everyone is advised to please stay at home for a while. We will take control of the situation in a while
— Office of Deputy Commissioner Islamabad (@dcislamabad) November 2, 2018
Aabpara chowk is under control now. Traffic is moving. Very sad and tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers for the bereaved. May Allah bless his soul. May Allah protect all of us.

It wasn’t until the wee hours of the night between 2nd and 3rd November, after the rowdy crowds had dispersed and sanitation teams had been called in that Islamabad’s Deputy Commissioner finally called it a day.
It has been reported from authentic sources that talks between TLP and Govt are successful. We hope that all areas will be cleared tomorrow and normalcy will be restored. You have been wonderful Twitter. Over and out!
— Office of Deputy Commissioner Islamabad (@dcislamabad) November 2, 2018
Yes Sir. People are dispersing from Faizabad. I have called the sanitation teams to clear the roads so that everyone may be able to use the roads asap.
— Office of Deputy Commissioner Islamabad (@dcislamabad) November 2, 2018
The responsibility and the paramount sense of duty with which Hamza Shafqaat shouldered his job description was not left unappreciated. The citizens of Islamabad were all praises for the man who led the city through chaos like a true pro.
A competent D.C., in my early days had seen D.Cs like this commanding respect of masses. Very well done, brave man.
