Former senator, influential cleric and the man who once proudly proclaimed himself as the “father of Taliban,” Maulana Samiul Haq has been assassinated at his residence in Rawalpindi. Confirming the news of his father’s death, Maulana’s son informed a news outlet that his driver had returned home after running errands only to find Samiul Haq lying still in a pool of blood, no longer alive.
According to Maulana’s driver/gunman, he had been away from the house for approximately 15 minutes and it is during this time that the assassination took place. His son, Hamid further shared that Maulana Samiul Haq had been stabbed multiple times and then shot in the head.
Samiul Haq’s assassination comes at the heels of a tense security situation across the country following violent agitation by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) against the acquittal of Aasia Bibi in a decade old blasphemy case.
Reports Suggest Personal Motives Behind Murder
Although the official statement issued by the spokesperson of Maulana Sami states that the identity of his assailant(s) and motives are unknown, it is being reported by senior journalists on social media that his murder might have no connection with the ongoing agitation as earlier speculated.
Exclusive. Initial investigation and forensic assessments of the scene of Maulana Samiul Haq’s murder show strong clues of murder ‘for personal motives’. Experts rule out terrorism. Family might not pursue the matter on the streets.
