Lahore Qalandars have replaced their injured skipper Mohd. Hafeez with Pakistan’s former captain Salman Butt. This then will be Salman’s first high profile event since he was banned after being found guilty of spot-fixing in 2010.
Inevitably, a good PSL will help the opening batsman in staging an international comeback for a number of reasons.
Enjoys Sympathies of Selectors
It is no secret that chief selector, Inzamam-ul-Haq and head coach Mickey Arthur had agreed to select Salman Butt for the tour to West Indies in 2017. However, only because of another spot-fixing scandal that resulted in Sharjeel Khan’s ban, the 34-year old’s return was delayed. Hence, he already enjoys sympathies of people who matter and a good show in PSL 4 is likely to make it easier for the selectors to name him in Pakistan’s squad that meets Australia next in UAE.
People Will Forgive and Forget
People in Pakistan are emotional. Expect them to criticize the Lahore Qalandars’ team management for allowing Butt a comeback if he fails to deliver. However, don’t be surprised if they begin asking for his international comeback as soon as he puts up a good knock. Thus, Pakistanis will for sure, forgive and forget and public opinion will be in his favor if the left-handed batsman manages to entertain during the tournament.
Fakhar’s Poor Form
It is no secret that bowlers around the globe seem to have worked out Fakhar’s technique and that he is finding it difficult to respond to the pressure of international cricket. In need of a reliable opener, Pakistani selectors will not mind at all if Butt is able to show form during the event. Thus, this perhaps is Salman Butt’s best chance of regaing the lost glory.
