Opposite to the Silver Jubilee gate of Karachi University is a slum area. Children living there sell tissue papers, pens and other stationery items to the university students. They are mostly barefooted and tattered.

I was waiting for my route bus when I came across some of them with their families engaged in daily chores. They were sitting beside the bus stop in small groups. The thing that caught my attention was the ‘water’ being used by them. There was no water line or hand-pump instead they were using the filthy stagnant water for various purposes. It was a gloomy sight, I was ashamed of myself thinking how brutally I waste water.

We love to complain about the water shortage in the city but somewhere don’t realize that we have a part to play in our own limited capacities.

Please for the sake of many deprived communities in the city next time you use water, don’t forget to tap the ‘tap’ carefully!
