The pre-quarter final stage of the biggest football showdown came to an end last night and here is a recap of the thrilling knockout round of FIFA World Cup 2018.
France vs Argentina
Messi and co. faced France in this round and France rattled them completely to qualify for the quarter final. Griezmann scored in the 13th minute with a penalty but Di Maria’s sublime finish put the sides equal at Half time.
Mercado helped Argentina in gaining an edge but Pavard equalized. Next thing we know, 2 goals from Mbappe sealed the game for France.
Aguero did score in the dying moments but it was too late by then and Argentina’s journey of World Cup 2018 came to an end with a loss of 4-3.
Uruguay vs Portugal
The Euro Champions were pitched against Uruguay in the knockout phase and the latter won the game convincingly.
Cavani scored in the 7th minute and gave Uruguay the lead until Pepe equalized for Portugal. Cavani again achieved an edge with a brilliant header and won the game 2-1, booking their place in the quarter final.
Spain vs Russia
Spain were up against the home side and got an advantage early on with an own goal by the Russian defender but Dzyuba converted a penalty and brought the scorecard to equal.
No team could score after that until the end of extra time and we saw the game going on penalties. Koke and Iago Aspas missed the penalties for Spain which sent the team out of the World Cup 2018.
Croatia vs Denmark
An intriguing game saw Croatia taking on Denmark. Jorgensen scored in the 1st minute for Denmark but Mandzukic equalized in the 4th minute.
Modric’s penalty in the extra time was denied by Kasper Schmeichel and game went on to penalties where Croatian keeper saved 3 penalties and Denmark could only manage 2 saves. Croatia confirmed their spot in the quarters with a 3-2 on penalties.
Brazil vs Mexico
Brazil were the obvious favorites against Mexico and they easily defeated them 2-0. After a scoreless first half, a goal by Neymar in the 51st minute gave his side the lead.
Firmino found the net in 88th minute which proved to be the final nail in Mexico’s coffin. That’s how Brazil marched its way to the round ahead!
Belgium vs Japan
Japan were the underdogs in this fixture but they gave a very tough time to the Belgians. The Asians secured the driving seat when goals from Haraguchi and Inui saw Japan leading 2-0, but the Red Devils bounced back in great fashion and equalized with the help of Vetronghen and Fellaini.
Extra time was on the cards until in the stoppage time Belgium turned a Japan corner into a breathtaking counter attack and Chadli sent the ball inside the net, winning the game for Belgium 3-2.
Sweden vs Switzerland
Sweden locked horns with Switzerland in another exciting contest. Both sides tried to score but failed until Forsberg’s shot took a deflection and Sweden took a lead in the game.
Switzerland did not succeed in recovering from the damage and hence, found themselves on the losing side with a score 1-0 at full time.
Colombia vs England
The three lions took on Colombia in the last game; both sides have been excellent so far in the competition. At the end of the Half time none of the team could score.
In the 2nd half, a penalty from Harry Kane saw the English side leading but a header from Yerry Mina in the stoppage time took the game to extra time and further to the penalties.
Uribe and Bacca missed the penalties from Colombia and the game ended 4-3 on penalties in favor of England, landing them into the quarter final.
