By selecting too many power hitters who are neither reliable nor consistent, Lahore Qalandars seem to have missed the trick for sure. It is primarily their batting that has let them down during the ongoing season of Pakistan Super League (PSL) and hence, here is a look at some of the PSL discards who could have allowed stability to Lahore Qalandars.
In his mid 30s Faisal Iqbal has years and years of experience behind him which makes him one of the PSL discards who could have allowed stability to Lahore Qalandars. The veteran batsman from Karachi is pretty capable of scoring run a ball and allowing his partner on the other end an opportunity to dominate.
Lahore needs somebody like the great Miandad’s nephew (who later joined Karachi Kings as their manager) to keep things calm in the middle however, they have made a mistake by opting to select too many big hitters and are paying the price for it.
Salman Butt is controversial owing to the spot-fixing scandal that surfaced in 2010. Still, there is no doubt that he is a worthy limited overs upper order batsman who would have definitely been a better choice than somebody like Sunil Narine or Umar Akmal against the new ball.
Lahore Qalandars could not even chase a modest run rate of six an over against the Islamabad United the other day. Imagine Fawad Alam coming in at five to bat for the Qalandars during the game. His ability to rotate the strike is second to none in the country and therefore, he is one of the PSL discards who could have allowed stability to the Lahore Qalandars’ campaign.
Qalandars are at the bottom of the table for a reason and one can just hope that they learn from their mistakes if not during PSL 3, then at least before the next season.
