At least A Better Chance In The World Cup
Shoaib Malik looked better composed while leading Pakistan at Johannesburg. Unlike Sarfraz he did not have feedback to give every second ball. Bowlers too under him, looked extremely comfortable while going about their business. Moreover, he has enough experience and exposure to avoid unwanted incidents like the one Sarfraz got himself into.
Finally, with the world cup being Malik’s final ODI assignment; as he has already announced his ODI retirement following the tournament; Malik has nothing to lose and therefore, Pakistan under him will probably, have a better chance of clinching the trophy.

A Short Term Solution
For Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) however, Malik’s appointment would be a short term solution. Once the world cup ends PCB will have to look for a new captain and hence, deal with unnecessary politics with in the team that is generally evident every time the top position goes vacant. Appointing Malik then, might provide temporary relief but not without long term repercussions.

Can’t Have The Same Captain Across Formats
PCB most definitely wants to have the same guy leading Pakistan in all formats owing to the fact that the green caps generally struggle every time they have different skippers leading them. Since, Malik has retired from Test cricket and because he won’t be available to lead even in the ODIs after the world cup; there is no way PCB will be able to employ the one captain in all formats formula.

Verdict
Hence, given the scenario PCB is likely to stick with Sarfraz at least till the world cup that takes place later in the year in England and later appoint someone else if needed. Nevertheless, if Malik is able to secure an ODI and T20 series victory in South Africa the probability of PCB giving a second thought cannot really be ruled out, at this point in time.
