Amid tights security in Pakistan’s capital, the Supreme Court dismissed a review petition against the acquittal of Aasia Bibi in a decade old blasphemy case.
On 31 October 2018, a 5-member bench of the Supreme Court had found Aasia Bibi innocent and had ordered her immediate release from prison. Following the verdict, the country had been gripped by street violence led by Khadim Hussain Rizvi’s Tehreeke-e-Labbaik.
Following an end to the street violence that lasted three days, a review petition by one, Qari Muhammad Salaam was filed in the Supreme Court.
When the petition was put forth before a 3-member bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, today, the honorable court pointed out that the petitioner could not point any mistake in the earlier judgment and so, his petition was dismissed.
Pakistan had been waiting with held breath for the verdict on the review petition and as soon as its dismissal was made public, a wave of celebration went across the country.
BRAVO: The verdict was given on the basis of testimonies; does Islam say that one should be punished even if they are found not guilty?
Prove to us what [you believe] is wrong with the verdict,

There are also of course, many who are questioning the many years of solitary confinement that Aasia Bibi was subjected to…

#AsiaBibi might be declared judicially free today but we must ask ourselves did we not snatch her freedom as well as crushing our own in demonizing her or by being careful with our words?
What kind of freedom is this?#DaSingaAzadiDa— Reham Khan (@RehamKhan1) January 29, 2019
Some Twitterati were quick to mock the hooligans who had kept the country hostage to street violence following the original verdict in October 2018.
