The biggest footballing event is here and the sports lovers are going absolutely crazy over it. Teams are all prepped up for the showdown. FIFA World Cup 2018 is packed with superstars and legends, and since the Pakistanis are not acquainted with the game much, I have decided to put together a list of 13 players who can give others a run for their money in FIFA World Cup 2018.
1. Lionel Messi of Argentina
The 5 time Ballon D’or winner will be charged to clinch the trophy this time in Russia. Back in 2014, the legend’s side fell short of a goal in the final against Germany. The back to back losses in Copa America 2015 and 2016 against Chile has disappointed him but this time he will go all out to win the trophy he has always wished for; the holy grail of the World Cup.
2. Eden Hazard of Belgium
The Belgian winger has been in hot form since past few seasons for Chelsea, but somehow has failed to duplicate his form on International stage. The winger has immense talent and temperament to snatch the game from the opponents and in Russia we all are expecting him to breathe fire under his national flag.
3. Neymar Jr of Brazil
The burden of being the world’s most expensive player is not easy to lift yet Neymar has done justice to it brilliantly so far. Despite being out for 4 months due to an injury, in the friendly game against Austria he scored a goal coming off the bench. He won his nation the Olympic gold in 2016 and no wonder the skilled guy can grab the trophy this year as well.
4. James Rodriguez of Colombia
The winner of World Cup Golden boot 2014, the golden boy James Rodriguez will be firing at all cylinders after a great season with his club. The Colombian has been sensational in his national colors and always steps up when his team needs it. On his day he can run riots against his opponents and he will surely show us some of his skills this time again.
5. Christian Eriksen of Denmark
The Tottenham star has nudged his game drastically over a period of time and is now considered one of the most consistent play-makers in his league. The Danish team may not have a very memorable World Cup but on this big stage, Eriksen in the Danish shirt will be orchestrating the game from the center of the park which will be a treat to watch.
6. Luka Modric of Croatia
One of the finest mid-fielders of the modern era will grace the field with his technique and versatility this year in Russia. No matter where the Croatians end up in the competition, Luka Modric’s performance will not disappoint. Over the years, the Real Madrid star has pulled strings for his national team and in Russia it will be no different.
7. Harry Kane of England
The two time Premiere League Golden Boot winner will start the World Cup for England. The youngster has been phenomenal for his club and has built a reputation of a killer striker. If he can replicate his heroics for England, no wonder he can score a dozen in the competition and can fly his side to the very end of this competition.
8. Mohamed Salah of Egypt
The guy with 44 goals to his name last season will lead his side in this World Cup. Mohamed Salah single handedly led his team to the World Cup 2018 and once again can pull off an upset with his game. His twists, turns and jaw dropping finishes are something that fans are eagerly waiting for.
9. Antoine Griezmann of France
The highest scorer of the Euros 2016 and the superstar of the French team, Antoine Griezmann will be a key player to watch out for in this World Cup. His neat and calm finishing has earned him a spot among world’s bests. He ended the Euro Cup back in 2016 on the runners up side but this time he will not be in the mood to repeat it.
10. Thomas Muller of Germany
The most underrated forward in the recent times, Thomas Muller have had 2 exceptional World Cups prior to this, scoring 5 in each competition. He won the World Cup Golden Boot and Silver Boot in 2010 and 2014 respectively. The German forward will be keen to net the ball again and again this time and no one should miss out on him.
11. Robert Lewandowski of Poland
The tall, fair Polish striker from Bayern Munich will be central figure in Poland team who scored a record of 16 goals on his way to World Cup in the qualifiers. The mammoth conversion rate of a key pass to goal has been mind boggling when it comes to Robert Lewandowski and the rate can only be bettered by him.
12. Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal
The current FIFA Player of the year is having a super amazing run with his club and country. He won 3 consecutive UCLs with his club and is the current European Champion with his country. The fans across the world are desperate to see him lift the World Cup trophy and the former Manchester United star would be full of beans to have a cracking competition.
13. Isco Alarcon of Spain
The Spanish maestro, Isco Alarcon will be a key figure in his team this World Cup. The heir to the legendary Iniesta as they say has an amazing goal creating opportunities and equally amazing goal scoring abilities. He will be dictating the midfield with his vision and playmaking skills. Any football fan cannot get his eye off him due to his ravishing style of play.
