October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global annual drive involving thousands of participants, to educate people about breast cancer and share with them the research that has been done on the subject.

Breast cancer is a cancer that first develops in breast tissue. There are numerous different types of this kind of cancer. If found only in the breast and possibly armpit lymph nodes is known as early, or primary breast cancer. There are several types of early breast cancer, including non-invasive and invasive breast cancer.

While you can learn about other different types of this chronic disease on internet if you want to, given below are the causes of it.

Our genes, our lifestyle and our environment all contribute to the risk of developing this cancer. Although most breast cancer patients will not be able to identify a single specific cause, scientists have come up with several risk factors that increase our chances of developing this disease.

Treatment of breast cancer:
Different treatments are suitable for different types of breast cancer. Most women with early breast cancer will have more than one treatment which may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted therapy.

Owing to the research, more people are now able to win the fight against this deadly disease. Around 80% of women with suffering from this disease are still alive five years after diagnosis, however around 50,000 women still fall prey to this cancer each year.

According to different studies, breast cancer happens to be the most common cancer in Pakistan. Experts report that at least 1 in 9 Pakistani women has a risk of developing this cancer at some stage of her life. Also, unfortunately Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer in Asia.

According to the reports by World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer rate is getting worse day by day. Each year around 11,500 women and 80 men die from this disease across the globe which results into nearly 1,000 deaths each month.

Sadly, Breast cancer is still viewed as a stigma in Pakistan. Majority of women are unaware of its warning signs and those who know about it, neither share it nor do they seek medical help.
Lack of awareness, social taboos and myths are the main reasons why women behave in such a manner.

With time, the disease is not only becoming a widespread but its also affecting women of younger age.

It’s high time that we  spread awareness about this cancer and encourage Pakistani women to get precautionary check-ups regularly for its only early detection that can save lives.
