Just as most mainstream media outlets, most notably Dawn Media Group, continue to look the other way vis-a-vis Pakistani filmmaker Jami Mehmood’s #MeToo story, the ace director himself continues to fight fire with fire.

In his latest round of tweets, Jami sends out a clear warning to his rapist to not “push him around.”

Without giving away too much, Jami says about enough to invoke rage in anyone with the slightest hint of a conscious.

He talks about having lunch with his assailant’s mother, denoting that Jami was very much on family terms with the man who raped him.

For the first time, he makes a reference to “doping,” implying that both he and the assaulter were perhaps intoxicated at the time of the attack.

He then goes on to mention the rapist’s ring cutting him from the inside and the assailant’s elbow pushed hard on his neck.

This last bit creates a very disturbing mental image of the assault for the reader, emphasizing the raw brutality to which he was subjected by the powerful media moghul 13 years ago.

And while the first tweet was hard-hitting enough, Jami did not stop there.

In what left a huge lump in our throats, Jami revealed in the second tweet that after the assault, his rapist kept asking him to “admit that I enjoyed it.”

He also makes a tell-tale mention of “Marriott Road” Karachi. A simple Google search will reveal the name of the road on which Marriott Hotel in Karachi is located.

With every new tweet, Jami seems to be coming closer to the point where he might finally name the culprit.

However, given that virtually no one from the news or entertainment industry has publicly reached out to offer support, if Jami does decide to reveal the name, it might be a very long and lonely battle that he would be expected to fight.

At this time, the deafening silence of the country’s elite and even liberal circles needs to be called out.

Surely, the rapist in question is a very powerful man with unfathomable access to both money and influence at his disposal. However, if Pakistan chooses to ignore Jami Mehmood’s #MeToo story, it will lose its right to demand justice for our Zainabs and Farishtas, whose protection is closely linked with bringing sexual offenders to justice – no matter how powerful and “prestigious.”
