The #MeToo movement in Pakistan came under attack following the suicide of Lahore’s lecturer based on false accusation of sexual harassment.
Many feminists came to the defense of the movement saying that one incident cannot be used to disregard the entire cause.

But one Twitter thread – that of Pakistani filmmaker Jami – in support of the #MeToo stood out because its heart-wrenching details.
Jami Mehmood said on his Twitter account that he was raped by a powerful media tycoon 13 years ago. Jami said that he shared his #MeToo story because he feared that the whole movement would be harmed by one wrongful death.
“One wrongful death does not mean that all victims are fake and liars.”
-Jami Mahmood
Pakistanis poured heartfelt messages in support of Jami but surprisingly there was a complete silence by woke Twitterati and people from his own industry.

Except Eman Suleman and Armeena Khan, no one from Pakistan’s entertainment industry lent their support or even talked about the Jami’s #MeToo story.
People expected Mahira Khan, who had previously spoken about #MeToo movement, to openly support Jami.
Mahira did speak-up eventually but after three days and that too in a subtle manner, not even naming Jami.
She started by expressing her anger about the unfair death of Afzal Mehmood and then went on to say that it boiled her blood to see a rapist roaming freely.
The deafening silence at the part of Pakistan’s media industry reflects the power dynamics. The fear to speak up by even the most high profile celebrities is at some level comprehensible. However, make no mistake, if this silence persists, it will deprive our entertainment industry of any credibility and strip it of its right to speak-up for a #MeToo cause in the future.
