Karima Baloch, 37 years old renowned Baloch human rights activist was found dead in Toronto, Canada on Sunday night. Toronto Police reported that she was last seen in the Bay Street, Queens Quay West area of the city at 3pm on December 20.

Several news sources have reported that currently there is not a lot of information available to conclude the cause of her death.

Baloch actively spoke up against the insurgency and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan. She was the first female head of Baloch Students’ Organization (BSO) that was later banned in 2013 under terrorism charges. Karima was also named by the BBC in its prestigious 100 Most Inspirational and Influential Women of 2016.

In 2015, Karima sought asylum in Canada citing life in danger in Pakistan. She often made it to the headlines for her activism, protests and her communication with notable personalities around the world. Baloch continued her activism in exile on social media.

In 2017, she was all over the news when she reached out to Indian PM Narendra Modi. She released a video of her sending out a message that said,

“On this day I have come to you and would like to say that we consider you as our brother. And we expect that you become the voice of Baloch genocide, war crimes in Balochistan, human rights violation in international forums and become the voice of those sisters whose brothers are missing.”

Karima Baloch recently made it to the headlines again when the EU Disinfolab released its reports on the network of media outlets and NGOs that India had been actively funded to propagate fake news about Pakistan and create unrest in the country. Baloch’s NGO was an active contributor of this network propelling many to connect the dots.

Even though there’s not much data to back the reason behind Baloch’s death, journalists and researchers have put out their word on it.

However, there’s another side of the report that has termed her death as ‘non-criminal.’ DAWN news in their report cited that the Toronto Police while answering their questions said that there is no reason to believe ‘foul-play.

On the other hand, The Guardian reported that the deceased’s husband Hammal Haider had cautioned against ruling out foul play.

This is a developing story and updates will be published as more information emerges.
