Film maker Jami Mahmood came out in support of #MeToo movement with his own story of brutal rape 13 years ago by a powerful media tycoon.
The #MeToo movement in Pakistan came under attack after a Lahore based lecturer Afzal Mehmood died by suicide citing false allegation of sexual harassment against him.

While people from all sections of the society came in support of Jami…
…Many “woke” Pakistanis on Twitter were surprisingly silent about this whole episode.
The woke Twitterati include news personalities, Zarrar Khurro, Marvi Sirmed, Hasan Zaidi, Shahzeb Khanzada, Cyril Almeida and celebrities such as, Mahira Khan, Osman Khalid Butt, etc.
Marvi Sarmad simply retweeted Jami’s thread while others did not even feel the need to do that.
An unexpected turn in the #MeToo story of Jami Mahmood
After Jami said he confided the name of his assailant to a top journalist of Pakistan, the story of his assault was taken down by leading media houses including Dawn and The Jang Group.
Twitterati was quick to point that out and tried to figure out the connection.
Pakistanis questioned Dawn, which is supposedly taken as a champion of freedom of speech in Pakistan, as to why it felt the need to remove the story
The media establishments did re-post Jami Mehmood’s story after some time. However, the re-posting came with major edits: clues identifying the rapist were either missing altogether or grandly toned down.
The people who had lent their support to Jami were all of a sudden silent on why the story was removed and then re-published
Bina Shah who tweeted in supported of Jami said removing of the articles was a fear tactic but did not condemn it.
Mahwash Ajaz, a feminist and a writer also speaks about freedom of expression but did not condemn the blatant censorship by mainstream media outlets.
Nida Kirmani, a woke Twitterati who earlier spoke in support of the Moor director, later conveniently chose to ignore the curtailment of freedom of speech in Jami’s case.
The Dawn staff was either completely silent or giving bizarre justifications.
Madiha Syed, a sub-editor at Dawn termed the removal as “server problem.”
Yeah sure, The News, Geo News and Dawn, all were having server problems at the exact same time and ONLY with Jami’s story!
Munnazzah Raza, a writer at Dawn Images who mostly tweets about feminism was also completely silent.
