The social media dispute between Cynthia D. Ritchie and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) began after she accused slain PPP leader, Benazir Bhutto of having women raped.

Not very surprisingly, the accusation did not go down well with the political party and its leaders who demanded action against the American blogger.

Things came to a head when Cynthia Ritchie refused to back-down and accused former Interior Minister Rehman Malik of raping her in May 2011.

In a live video on her Facebook page, she also accused Makhdoom Shahabuddin and former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani of “physically manhandling” her.

The allegations were vehemently denied by the PPP leadership and Rehman Malik promptly sent a legal notice to Cynthia Ritchie.

But Cynthia has held her ground and has continued her social media tirade against Rehman Malik.

Many have pressed home the point that a thorough investigation be carried out to probe the allegations.

If the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements have taught us anything, it is that when a woman calls rape, it demands an unconditional and impartial investigation.

But not everyone is as enthusiastic about a probe. There are naysayers who believe Cynthia is on a mission to malign the PPP.

According to Dawn, Cynthia D. Ritchie has written a letter to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to clarify her stance as PPP leaders had filed a complaint against her earlier.

As per reports in the letter, she has claimed that “she is a law-abiding resident of Pakistan” and had been “…investigating PTM (with the assistance of supporting agencies and the military).” She further wrote that her investigations led to the unearthing of “links of anti-state activities between PTM and PPP.”
