Sindh is currently leading the nationwide tally of COVID-19 cases in Pakistan with 394 of the 875 coming out of the southern province.

Of these 394 confirmed cases, 260 patients have been tested positive in Sukkur and 131 in Karachi. At least 83 cases of local transmission had been identified in the province by late Monday evening.

With the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus threatening to wreck havoc across Sindh, the provincial government has announced a complete lockdown.

However, despite clear instructions an acute lack of cooperation by the locals has been observed in many places.

In a video doing rounds on social media, an officer of the Sindh Police is seen pleading with the locals to remain indoors and avoid places with large crowds.

“For Allah’s sake,” says the police officer, ” Don’t come out of your houses; we beg you! The only solution to avoid this disease is to stay at home. We won’t fire bullets or use bantons; we are appealing – for God’s sake, for the sake of this child, his happiness – stay at home!”

Despite the officer’s repeated calls to stay indoors the people occupying the crowded market place did not show much inclination to comply.

The administration in Sindh is not alone in battling a lack of cooperation from the citizens. Earlier, the government of Punjab had to disband a number of people who – in violation of Section 144 – had gathered in the streets to play cricket.
