On Tuesday, in Lebanon’s capital city of Beirut, a fire at a warehouse containing explosives at the Port of Beirut led to an enormous blast wave across the city, killing 100 people and injuring at least 4000.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, said the cause of the explosion was around 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate. He stressed that those who are responsible will be punished in the strongest terms.

US President Donald Trump, however told reporters at the White House, “It was a bomb of some kind,” and “looks like a terrible attack” in a statement contradicting the Lebanese government.

Lebanese authorities have declared Beirut a “disaster area” due to the incident announcing a two-week state of emergency.

These 7 before and after images following the Beirut blast show the magnitude of devastation and are a lesson for the rest of the world why violence and war should never be the options.

True, that the Beirut blast was not the result of a terror attack, however its cause – i.e. storage of huge amounts of ammonium nitrate – is closely linked to the country’s “security” needs.

“This reminds me of what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” said Beirut Governor Marwan Aboud. “I have never seen such widespread destruction. This is a national catastrophe. This is a disaster for Lebanon. We’re already living through days where we can barely keep going.”

The unfortunate fact is that even after 75 years of the devastation caused in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we still quote it as an example but are never not really ready to learn from history to avoid catastrophic events.
