On Monday Pakistan Army rescued 22 students of LUMS stranded in snow-hit Rattu village in Gilgit.

The rescue operation was carried out on the directives of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa soon after the LUMS administration approached the army for help.

According to a statement issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR),

The students were stranded at Rattu in Gilgit for the past five days and the LUMS administration had requested Pakistan Army for help. Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa had directed for their immediate heli-lifting after LUMS administration approached Army for help.

Soon after the visuals of these students sitting in a military helicopter went viral, a pointless LUMS vs Army debate inevitably started to make rounds.

People started to call out the rescued kids for taking the help from Pakistan Army – an institution that LUMS students have a history of criticizing.

Here’s why I think the whole LUMS(U) vs Army debate triggered by the pictures of the rescue operation was quite pointless…

First off, there were 22 students who were rescued. How does Pakistani Twitter know the world view of each one of them? For all we know 11 of them were THIS close to joining the army but their eye sight played spoiled sport!

Secondly, what did these Twitter warriors want – the 22 kids to freeze to death?

Thirdly, why can’t one take help from someone s/he criticizes? We all have something against our parents but don’t mind taking favours from them, now do we?

And finally, can’t we just for once be happy that 22 precious lives were saved rather than making something as wonderful as this a reason to make Pakistani Twitter more toxic than it already is?!
