Rumors in media suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has conducted meetings and is in the middle of forging partnerships to introduce a new Big 5 model at the ICC (International Cricket Council) level. So, here is a look at why BCCI’s Big 5 Model can be a real threat for Pakistan cricket.

So, What’s The Buzz?

News in media suggest that BCCI has already consulted England and Australia (who were also part of the previously failed “Big 3 Model”) as well as New Zealand and South Africa to form a partnership with in ICC in order to ensure that all major decisions in future are only taken after receiving nod from the aforesaid five boards.

If the five boards actually manage to achieve what they want to; broadcasters will really be happy supporting them because they do actually provide plenty of audience for them from the African, Australian, European and the Asian continents i.e. where the game is keenly followed.

Smaller Nations Likely To Agree

Smaller cricket playing nations such as Bangladesh and Afghanistan already work under the massive influence of BCCI. Sri Lanka too is likely to agree without much resistance. Resistance however, might come from Pakistan and the West Indies against such a formula but eventually, they will have to give up if seven or eight boards unite for the cause.

Isolation Very Much A Possibility

It is no secret that BCCI has made every effort over the last few years to isolate Pakistan cricket at the international level. If seven or eight of the major boards decide to proceed with the formula  (that can be proposed anytime during the next couple of months or so); PCB will need a miracle to protect their interest on one hand and to avoid isolation on the other.

PCB for now must wait and see what happens. If all five boards decide to press the ICC for the approval for the new formula, PCB must not spoil its relationship with the Australian, English and the South African boards by becoming an unnecessary hurdle. Instead, PCB should look for a bargain that protects its interests and ensures that it is not left isolated at the international level.

So, what do you say? Will BCCI’s “Big 5 model” work?
