Domestic violence is subjecting your spouse to physical, mental or sexual abuse. Usually, it pans out as husbands abusing their wives and rarely the other way around.

In Pakistan, domestic violence has been a socio-political issue for quite some time now. Just a few years back domestic violence was not even considered the bone of contention to begin with.

But thanks to the social media and dramas like Khaas, Hania and Kankar that have made the audience aware of its existence.

Here is a list of 5 reasons why I think domestic violence is still rampant in Pakistan!

1. Intolerance

We as a nation are very intolerant. Intolerant of other people’s beliefs, cultures, traditions and ideologies and that manifests itself in the personal life of the individual as well. Hence, contesting views are often met with criticism that take up harsh forms such as beating or torturing the spouse.

2. Religious Misinterpretations

Every aspect of our life is mostly derived from religion especially when we talk about married life. Historically speaking, clerics have been giving Fatwas that normalize subjecting your wife to beating if she is being disobedient. And the male population uses it as a scapegoat to beat their wives.

3. Patriarchy

Patriarchy is a real thing and it is as damaging to men as it is to women. Most of the violence and murder cases are done in the name of honor. By hook or by crook men’s honor is tied with women’s deeds and is the root cause of domestic violence.

4. Forced Marriages

Forced marriages and child marriages are another major cause that lead to domestic violence. If a person is not mature enough and not ready to accept such a life changing event then evidently it will lead to violence at home.

5. Authorities aren’t Bothered

Firstly, such cases go undocumented as some form of settlement between the couple. Even if the authorities are notified, our legal system is not strong enough to provide protection to the victim. People in the social circle are also reluctant saying it is the couple’s personal matter and usually blame the victim.

What do you think are the reasons for domestic violence in Pakistan?
