The move to sack Maleeha Lodhi by PTI government at a time when Pakistan needs support of international community on Kashmir issue surprised Pakistanis considering Maleeha Lodhi’s vast number of achievements.

Maleeha Lodhi served as Pakistan’s representative to United Nations (UN) for four and a half years.

“Representing Pakistan at the world’s most important multilateral forum was both a privilege and an enormous responsibility. I had planned to move on following the United Nations General Assembly and am fortunate to leave on a high note after a successful visit by Prime Minister Imran Khan and am humbled by the appreciation I have received and the support I have also received over the years.”

There are so many occasions when Maleeha Lodhi made Pakistan proud

1. The four and half years she served as a diplomat helped Pakistan in gaining a positive image at the world’s most important multilateral organization.

2. She extensively advocated for Kashmir issue, putting forward the plight of Kashmiris using every international platform.

3. She ensured a meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to discuss Kashmir crisis. This was the first time the UNSC took up the dispute in over 50 years.

4. Lodhi organised the first visit of the President of the General Assembly to Pakistan in almost 8 years briefings about Kashmir.

5. She represented Pakistan as Ambassador in the US and Britain. Her diplomatic experience spans eleven years.

6. Maleeha served as a member of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board from 2001 to 2005.

7. A Russian website, “Gazeta.ru” which has a huge following listed Lodhi among the five successful women diplomats in the world.

8. She was the first Pakistani woman to be appointed as permanent representative of Pakistan to United Nations (UN).

9. She has not only demonstrated her expertise in foreign affairs but also in journalism. She was the first woman in all of Asia to become the editor of a national daily newspaper.

10. In 1994, Time magazine nominated her as one of a hundred people in the world who will help shape the 21st century.

11. She is the recipient of the President’s award of Hilal-e-Imtiaz for public service in Pakistan.

12. She taught Politics and Political Sociology at the London School of Economics in 1980s.
