Some media reports indicate that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is seriously considering Misbah-ul-Haq as the next head coach. Here is a look at why it is a ridiculous idea and why it is likely to backfire.

An Outdated Approach
There is no doubt that Misbah lead Pakistan well to get the green shirts out of a crisis when he was given the responsibility way back in 2010. Pakistan’s number position in the Test rankings is another prominent achievement of his as the skipper. His captaincy style was nevertheless, completely exposed during the world cup 2015 as well as during the tours to Australia and New Zealand in 2016-17. Thus, Pakistan is in need of fresh ideas and not tried, tested and failed formulas that Misbah is likely to bring with him.

Defensive Batting Tactics
Again, Misbah’s defensive tactics might have worked for the green caps initially. However, in the long run they were simply infectious. Hence, Pakistan began producing batsmen across formats who were far too scared to take the risk.
Eventually, under Mickey Arthur, a visible effort was made to undo the damage. Nevertheless, Pakistan’s batting mind-set still suffers owing to Misbah’s era. Thus, it would be idiotic of PCB to bring him back at a time when batting standards and mind sets have changed dramatically in all three formats of the game.

Long Term Damage To Pakistan’s Fast Bowling
Once known for its fast bowlers; under Misbah Pakistan became more reliant on spinners. The former captain’s defensive approach then, never really allowed him to encourage his faster men to take some risks to buy early wickets. Resultantly, quickies were eventually, seen providing support to spinners while doing the stock bowler’s job even with the new ball at times!

Appointing Misbah-ul-Haq as the next head coach then, will be a suicide without a shadow of doubt. We hope PCB understands that before it is too late.
