Twitterati Have A Mixed Bag Of Reactions As Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Are Stepping Away From Royal Duties

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, took to Instagram to announce that they are stepping back as “senior” members of Royal family.

They further intend to become financially independent and no longer want to receive the taxpayers’ funding.

In a joint statement, they said:

After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.

The Queen’s office responded in a statement saying, “Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”

Meghan had been struggling with the coverage and scrutiny she had been receiving from British press ever since she became part of the Royal family. Previously, in an interview she had acknowledged that she was “struggling” with all the media attention stating, “…not many people have asked if I’m OK, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”
