Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has started a campaign against tinted glasses across the city. To raise awareness about this issue, SSP Traffic Islamabad, Farrukh Rashid, took to Twitter to educate people about the perils that using a tinted glass window can cause on the road.

He started off by explaining that tinted glass windows were “a safety hazard and a security issue” and rightly so..

He made a very valid point stating that public safety should take precedence over the wish to guard one’s privacy.

It “obstructs the work of the police” as one can barely see through a tinted glass. Again, very important point!

“No excuse is valid,” said SSP Farrukh Rashid, prioritizing the elimination of illegal window tints.

Up until this point everything that the Senior Superintendent of Police said made absolute sense. However, the last tweet in this thread almost entirely ruined the message for many Pakistani Twitter users.

It was his suggestion for people to “dress more modestly,” that didn’t go down too well with the people.

Cyril Almedia retweeted-with-a-comment criticizing SSP Traffic Islamabad for advising citizens on how to dress. He also pointed out that not everyone could afford to “crank-up” the air conditioning.

For the umpteenth time: what a person wears CANNOT guarantee their right to privacy!

A definition of “modest dressing,” is certainly in order…

Within moments of the backlash, the contentious tweet was deleted and “tweet 5/5” was re-posted after removing the advice to “dress modestly.”

As much as we support Islamabad Traffic Police’s drive to eliminate tinted windows, we can’t help but point out that it is not the police department’s job to tell people what to wear and what to not.

We’ll do away with the tinted windows, SSP sahib, if you promise to not judge us for our attire!
