Around 75 poor families were left shelterless in sector G-11/4 of Islamabad after the administration razed their huts.
Videos emerged on Thursday showing a bulldozer demolishing huts in the urban slum of the federal capital.
Another video made rounds in which a woman was seen telling about how the residents begged the authorities to spare their homes but they showed no mercy.
Following an outcry on social media, Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari took notice of the razed huts in Islamabad.
Mazari took to Twitter and told she had spoken to Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Interior Minister and an “immediate inquiry” had been ordered.
She revealed that the action had been taken without the approval of CDA and it would be investigated as to why any prior notice to the authorities was not given and permission not sought.
The minister added that action will be taken immediately if any police official is found involved in this “absolutely unacceptable” incident.
Deputy Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat said that the concerned official of the enforcement department had been suspended over the action.
Replying to the tweet by the Federal Minister, he said that an inquiry had been ordered to determine the facts. He further told that according to the officials who were involved, “It was a den of food beggars.”
He added that food and shelter were being arranged for the people on the site.
Mazari made it clear that even if they were professional beggars they had all the rights to “dignity and due process.”
