Pakistani film, RAI – The Living Miracle is finally getting the national recognition it deserves after bagging an award internationally in the “Honorable Mention” category at the Canadian & International Short Film Festival.

Producers of the docu-film, Pakistan Youth Change Advocates (PYCA) &
Cams and Comms took to social media yesterday to announce that RAI has been officially selected among top 5 entries by Pakistan Television (PTV) for its short film festival titled “Green Belief.”

The tweet detailed that the short documentary film will be premiered tonight nationwide on PTV Home at 9:30 PM and will be repeated at 2:30 PM tomorrow.

Based on a true story, RAI – The Living Miracle is Afshar Iqbal’s debut as a filmmaker and is already receiving much love and attention for showing the world a resilient side of Pakistan.

The message-driven documentary film traces the awe-inspiring true story of a terror attack survivor, Advocate Rai Azhar Hussain (Tamgha-e-Shujaat) who rose from the ashes defeating terrorism, disability and death!

As RAI continues its winning streak, it is heartening to see initiatives like “Green Belief” that encourage independent filmmakers by showcasing their work nationwide. However, what is even more worthy of acknowledgment are the reasons why we need to root for RAI.

Here’s why films like RAI deserve our attention!

For the sake of untold stories and unsung heroes…

Documentary films bring to light real stories of real people along with educating the world about ground realities. So, in a bid to create an environment more empathizing, we need to hear heroics of people like Rai Azhar who selflessly jumped in front of the danger to save others’ lives and in the act, became scarred for life.

Like RAI, there are many other survivors affected by terrorism, violence, abuse and other injustices who await to be seen and we, as a nation, can only prosper if we recognize the services of those whose blood and sweat has shaped the resilient face of Pakistan.

The dire need to promote documentary culture in Pakistan…

Unlike the international norm, a major chunk of Pakistanis do not indulge in documentary watching; a reason why the filmmakers tend to weigh in favor of feature films by the virtue of the profits generated. Now keeping the afore-established significance of documentaries in mind, the documentary filmmaking can only be encouraged once we cultivate the norm of documentary-watching.

This can only be done if non-feature films get the same air-time as feature films do across national television. Given this, RAI’s nationwide premiere is an instrumental feat that will give confidence to other aspirants in the same genre.

To promote a softer image of Pakistan…

Pakistan has long been at the receiving end of propaganda, maligning the country’s image internationally and undermining the sacrifices of Pakistanis who gave their lives for the promise of a peaceful tomorrow.

This is why documentaries showing a negative image of Pakistan get more footage internationally, and stories like RAI’s that aim to show the resilient side of Pakistan are shoved under a rock, stripping us off the opportunities to promote a softer image.

Given this, an initiative by the government that gives space to local talent like Afshar Iqbal, to counter the reputation-sabotaging campaigns, should be supported and reciprocated with greater love to remind the world of the contributions we have made as a nation so far.

So, do not forget to catch the nationwide premier of RAI – The Living Miracle tonight at 9:30 PM on PTV Home and show your love to this Pakistani film!
