The 73rd session of UN General Assembly is underway as I write and many world leaders have already given speeches that will go down in the history books, to say the least. A delegation from Pakistan is also in attendance however it’s the first time in last 5 years or so that instead of the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister of the country, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, is leading the commission. The newly elected premier decided to skip the session in order to focus on the looming currency crisis in the country. That said, I wanted Imran Khan to represent Pakistan at UNGA this year and here’s why!

UNGA has always provided a stage for the newly elected governments to introduce themselves to the world and set the tone for foreign policies aspired by the new office bearers. There’s no doubt that a seasoned politician like Qureshi is well equipped to do the task impressively but the presence of Imran Khan alongside his highly skilled FM would have turned more heads, resulted in a more influential narrative-building and subsequently, sent a stronger message.

To add to the argument, PM Khan is one of the biggest celebrities to come out of Pakistan by the virtue of nearly 21 great years he gave to cricket, representing the country around the world and bringing biggest of feats i.e country’s first ever World Cup to the nation. The former Captain has also served as a Chancellor at University of Bradford from 2005 to 2014. Being an Oxford alumnus, having the exposure of speaking at World Economic Forum, Chatham House in London, TED Talks and many other grand avenues, Khan has an incredible history of never letting the country down.

With all this experience under his belt, Khan undoubtedly possesses unmatched eloquence and lobbying skills! Therefore, he would have come across as more inspirational than any of his ministers and helped Pakistan in putting out a stronger case in issues like Indian atrocities in Kashmir, violation of Indus Water Treaty and Delhi sponsored terrorism.

Imran’s attendance at UNGA would have also dispelled all the speculations regarding military’s involvement in General Election 2018 and ensuing rigging, given the effortlessly likable and rational personality of his that has already won him the critical support of many of his opponents in the country.

Most importantly, the international press went bonkers when Khan won the election in July this year and many compared the gentleman to notorious Donald Trump. UNGA’s platform would have put these concerns to rest and showed the world that Trump’s wrecking power remains unparalleled to date!
