Faiz Ahmed Faiz didn’t write poetry, he wove magic with his pen. There was no finer combination of artistic finesse and dedication to a cause in Urdu poetry. His pieces were later turned into songs that are telling of his beautiful works.

The man who kindled and inspired human conscience. Faiz Ahmad Faiz shall be remembered for all times to come; as an acclaimed poet, progressive visionary, rational philosopher, peace activist, inspiring teacher, a great mentor and a symbol of hope for all those who continue to strive for a just & pluralistic society based on social justice and equality.

And on Faiz’s 36th death anniversary, here are some pieces of his writing turned into iconic songs and made into Coke Studio songs as well, which will prove why Faiz’s work is as hauntingly beautiful as it is.

1. Gulon Mein Rang

From Mehdi Hassan to Runa Laila, Arijit Singh to Fuzon, this song is celebrated over the years and various singers sung it beautifully. Here is the coke studio version which was sung by Ali Sethi in season 12.

2. Mujh Se Pehli Si Muhabbat

Not long ago, renowned Urdu poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz penned down a masterpiece titled Mujhse Pehli si Mohabbat, the nazm was later sung by Noor Jahan in her mesmerising voice. Mujhse pehli si mohabbat beautifully manages to capture the bewilderment of love, pain and separation. Presents you the coke studio version of this poem, sung by Humera Channa & Nabeel Shaukat in season 10.

3. Dasht e Tanhai

Dasht-e-Tanhai is a popular UrduNazm with the title Yaad . It was written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Originally composed by Mehdi Zaheer for Iqbal Bano. It was later sung by Tina Sani and Meesha Shafi in Coke Studio.

4. Bol Ke Lub

Faiz is widely hailed as a poet of the revolution, it needs to be stressed that his love poems are as good as or even better than his poems of protest against tyranny. “Bol”, a simple but elegant paean to free expression — whose relevance in our time is much more now. Bol is sung by many singers indulging Tina Sani, Vidya S & Rashid K for Manto (2018) and Farhan Saeed for Udaari. Listen to Coke Studio song by Safqat Amanat Ali Khan   

5. Aye Kuch Abr

Aaye Kuch Abr was written during a time of loneliness and separation in Faiz’s life, while he was imprisoned in Hyderabad Central Jail during the Rawalpindi Conspiracy Case, away from his wife and two daughters. Separated from his family, in 2011, this ghazal was performed (composed and sung) by Mehdi Hassan. Later, It was sung by Atif Aslam in the 12th season of Coke Studio.

6. Hum Dekhaingay

Hum Dekhenge was a powerful and popular piece of poetry, but it assumed iconic status and became a universal anthem of protest and hope after it was rendered by Iqbal Bano in 1986. The nazm was composed as a medium of protest against Zia Ul Haq’s oppressive regime. It has been quoted and sung widely across a variety of protests in South Asia. It was recreated in Coke Studio Season 11  under the aegis of Zohaib Kazi and Ali Hamza. Listen to the Song Here:
