Man Elbowed By Marriyum Aurangzeb For Putting His Arm Around Her Sparks Consent Debate

Maryam Aurangzeb was briefing the media about bringing back the body of Nawaz Sharif’s mother Begum Shamim Akhtar when a man stood near her. After the press conference, the man asked for a picture with Maryam Aurangzeb saying, “Baji Aik Tasveer Khinchiwani Hai.” When Maryam Aurangzeb allowed to capture the photo, the man put her hand on her shoulder without asking for her consent and started taking selfies close to her.

Maryam Aurangzaib is a major name in Pakistan Muslim League N, who is one of the front runners in every campaign held in support of Nawaz Sharif.

Yes please. We need to make it mandatory for Pakistani men to learn about respecting someone’s personal space, taking consent; And understanding that NO means NO. It is that simple if only we pay heed to it.

Consent as a concept is something that needs to be understood. Consent in our society is largely ignored and misunderstood. Our society doesn’t appreciate what a woman wants or what her opinion is, rather, it is the woman who needs consent from everyone else.
