On Monday, the leader of opposition Shehbaz Sharif in the National Assembly sought formation of a parliamentary panel to probe why security was not deployed where the motorway rape incident happened when the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had even issued a letter to this effect.
But very soon, Shehbaz Sharif not merely deviated from the subject entirely but his speech also took an extremely insensitive turn when he suddenly began praising his party for the construction of the motorway on which the gang rape happened!
As if the Sharif’s statement on the floor of the house was not disgraceful on its own, the applause that followed from the opposition benches further left so many of us positively outraged.
It’s nauseating to think of the level of sensitivity – or lack thereof – that our ruling class continues to demonstrate on crimes as heinous as rape.
On the contrary, Federal Minister for Communications and Postal Services Murad Saeed lambasted the opposition leader on how his debate revolved around who had built the motorway instead of focusing on the way forward.
This incident did not take place on the motorway, but I admit my responsibility for the incident. Being a man, I am responsible for this tragedy. As a member of this parliament, I am responsible for providing the citizens with their basic rights.
