Once the undisputed pillars of Pakistan’s batting lineup, Rizwan and Babar now find themselves in an unfamiliar and uncomfortable position — fighting to keep their spots. A combination of poor form, changing team dynamics, and dwindling support from both fans and the PCB has put their future in serious jeopardy. Both Rizwan and Babar have already lost their places in Pakistan’s T20I setup. Once considered automatic selections, they have now been sidelined in favor of younger, more aggressive batters. With the selectors clearly backing a new direction and no immediate vacancies in the top order, the prospects of either making a quick return to the shortest format look slim.

The ODI series loss in the West Indies only deepened concerns. Both players endured a poor run with the bat, failing to anchor innings or deliver match-winning performances when it mattered most. This comes on the heels of a disappointing Champions Trophy earlier in the year, where neither managed to make a significant impact. With competition for batting spots heating up, their places in the ODI squad are no longer guaranteed.

Perhaps most worrying for the duo is the perception shift. Once celebrated as modern greats, they now face criticism from fans for their strike rates, consistency, and inability to adapt to changing match situations. At the same time, the Pakistan Cricket Board appears to be prioritizing other players in its plans, signaling that Babar and Rizwan have a mountain to climb to regain their standing.

If they are to reclaim their place as Pakistan’s batting mainstays, both will need to deliver big, match-defining performances — and soon.
