US based doctor of Pakistani origin, Dr. Saud Anwar invented a ventilator that can cater to 7 patients at one time. The effort is to overcome the shortage of ventilators amid the global COVID-19 outbreak.
Dr. Saud Anwar is also a state senator and a pulmonologist working at Eastern Connecticut Health Network.
According to Anwar, the four-piece splitter technique has been used once before in the US in the aftermath of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. Anwar had read about this method in a research article that dates back to 2006.
Dr. Anwar while talking about the working of this ventilator said that, “I’ve been guiding people how to do this. One can get four (and now seven) patients on a single ventilator but it has to be done in an extremely focused manner. The catch is that the four patients need to be of a similar size with similar illnesses and similar lung physiology.”
The handling and utilization of this device is quite critical as there lies a slight chance of cross-infection. But the machine is equipped with filters to avoid this. Also, the patients are required to be heavily sedated, or “medically paralyzed” while the tubes should be of the same length.
Residents in South Windsor organised an “Unsung Heroes Parade” and marched to his house in their cars to show their gratitude for his contribution during the pandemic.
Dr. Saud Anwar and his team have offered people from around the world to reach out to them for any queries and get a model for 3D printing. He tweets @SaudAnwarCT.
